FALL

 
  • Take PSAT in October
  • Use agenda book to monitor assignments and important deadlines
  • Attend college fairs, especially the Howard County Counselor sponsored fair at Atholton High School
  • Research Colleges, determine the pros and cons of each school.
  • Complete Question of the day on collegeboard.com. Use hints to help figure out questions.
  • Practice Questions on collegeboard.com by using the skill inventory.
  • Take SAT prep course
  • Frequently visit Student Services website to preview scholarships and Summer Programs.
 
WINTER
 
  • Look for testing dates for the spring SAT.
  • Continue to research colleges
  • After receiving PSAT scores in December, meet with your counselor to review strategies to improve your score.
  • Take Choices college inventory with Student Services.
  • Work on testing skills by using practice SAT questions.
  • Complete Question of the day on collegeboard.com. Use hints to help figure out questions.
  • Practice Questions on collegeboard.com by using the skill inventory.
  • Begin looking for summer internships and program at colleges for high school students.
  • Visit the Student Services website often
 
SPRING
 
  • Inform your counselor if you are planning to join the military or apply to a Military Academy.
  • Check out Maryland Apprenticeship Program requirements if you are planning to go directly into the workforce.
  • Look at the benefits for attending Howard Community College and/or applying to the Rouse Scholars Program.
  • Complete Question of the day on collegeboard.com. Use hints to help figure out questions.
  • Practice Questions on collegeboard.com by using the skill inventory
  • Consider retaking or taking the SAT in June
  • Visit colleges and attend information sessions when available in Student Services
  • Ask two teachers to write letters of recommendations.
  • Check colleges to see if they require SAT 2 subject test.
  • Complete preliminary transcript request packet by June 1.
 
SUMMER
 
  • Visit colleges if you are unable to visit during the school year.
  • If you will be taking the SAT again in the fall, complete Question of the day on collegeboard.com. Use hints to help figure out questions and Practice Questions on collegeboard.com by using the skill inventory. Consider taking a SAT prep class to improve your score.
  • If you will be taking SAT II tests in October, review material over the summer.
  • Review your resume. Is it updated and ready to submit to colleges? Counselors can assist students by reviewing resume and making suggestions for improvement.
  • Research college essay requirements and start drafting essays.
  • Participate in summer leadership or community service opportunities.
  • Try to narrow your college application list to no more than 10 schools
