The Maryland Distinguished Scholar-Talent in the Arts Competition is available to all juniors who excel in one of the following five fine art areas:Visual Arts, Instrumental Music, Vocal Music, Dance, Drama. An information meeting will be held on Monday, February 22, 2010 in the Band Room (Room 206). Please see Mr. Overton in Student Services to pick up applications. Attention Senior Males: Young men must register for Selective Service within 30 days of their 18th birthday (this includes U.S. Citizens living abroad and non-citizen immigrant males ages 18-25 residing in the U.S.). Selective Service keeps a list of men who might be called on to serve our country in a national emergency. By registering for selective service you open yourself up to receiving financial aid for college, receiving Federal Job training, a Federal Job, and United States Citizenship, if you were not born in the United States. It is a felony not to register that is punishable by up to 5 years in prison and up to $250,000.00 in fines. Go to www.sss.gov to register. You can also register by going to your local post office and completing a registration form.

Transcipt Request: The Registrars need a minimum of 4 weeks to process your Transcript request. We make every effort to meet your deadlines, but 4 weeks is the requested notice that we need. The most important thing is that your application arrives by the college’s due date.

Veterinary Medical College Career Fair and Information Sessions: On March 14, 2010 the Association of American Veterinary Medical Colleges will be hosting a Veterinary Medical College Career Fair and information sessions from 2pm-5pm at the Westin Alexandria, 400 Courthouse Square, Alexandria, VA 22314. There will be guest speakers, admissions directors, administrators, and alumni who will tell you about the endless career opportunities in veterinary medicine. Military Information Night: River Hill High School will be hosting a County-wide Military Night on Wednesday, March 24 from 7pm-9pm. The Military Night will take place in the Cafeteria and Media Center. Representatives from the five Military Academies, private and state sponsored military colleges, enlistment recruiters, ROTC, and the Howard County JROTC programs at Atholton, Howard, and Oakland Mills will be present and will be manning tables to distribute information. In addition, representatives of Senator Cardin, Senator Mikulski and Congressman Cummings office will be on hand to discuss the nomination process for the Military Academies. We will also have representatives of the Military Academies discussing their application processes.

Student Assistance Program: River HillHigh School participates in the Student Assistance Program. SAP is a school-based team that offers support to students, parents, and teachers. The SAP provides a systematic approach to early identification, intervention, referral, and follow-up of students whose behavior indicates patterns that may be related to the use of tobacco, alcohol, or other drugs. If you suspect that a student is using tobacco, alcohol, or other drugs you can contact the guidance office and give us the student’s name. You can make an anonymous referral. The guidance office will then investigate the report and contact the student’s parent and make appropriate referrals. Students who are referred through the Student Assistance Program are not subject to disciplinary action at the time of the referral.

Howard County Youth Summit: Attention 9th and 10th grade students. River Hill High School can select 8 students to participate in the Howard County Youth Summit. The program is sponsored by the Voices of Change a diverse group of youth and adults who empower young people to create positive change in Howard County. The program will take place on Friday, March 19, 2010 from 8:30am-1pm at the Bridgeway Community Church. Lunch and transportation will be provided. The event will count as a field trip for selected students. If you are interested in participating in this event please see Mr. Vangeli in the Counseling Office for an application and additional information.

The 2010 PAVE program at Vanderbilt University, celebrating its 20th anniversary, is a summer pre-college program designed to strengthen the academic skills of students who are planning to enter a college engineering, pre-medical, science, or technology program, and ease the transition from high school to college. PAVE is open to high school students who are in the 11th grade (class of 2011) or 12th grade (class of 2010) during the 2009-2010 school year. More information can be found via the PAVE website at https://pave.vanderbilt.edu. Cost: $4,060 tuition. Need-based financial support is available. Program dates: June 21 through July 30, 2010. Scheduling meetings with your child’s counselor: Counselors handle their own appointment schedule. If you would like to meet with your child’s counselor you can email them or call student services at 410-313-7400 to set up an appointment. Although counselors may be available on a walk-in basis, it is always best to schedule an appointment ahead of time.
